Cisco runs a brilliant business dedicated to keeping the world’s networks running quick and securely. The only problem is that the high level of documentation on hardware and software products can make it confusing when trying to implement a new network design or modification.
The first reference material to consider is Cisco posters. These posters, often found free through the Cisco Academy or through third party retailers, cover many topics such as router commands and network hardware specifications. Keeping up a Cisco poster in your room is a great way to learn all of the ins and outs of Cisco products a little bit each day at a time.
Cisco also has great software utilities that can guide you through the process of learning how networks operate. Packet Tracer is their flagship software suite, which is only offered to those who are either in the Cisco Academy or have been in the past. This free program is a godsend for teachers, who are able to easily create labs and print them off for students.
You can find other types of software as well, that instead acts like a dictionary or reference guide. These programs are free for everyone, and not just Cisco students. Having a Cisco dictionary around is ideal for the workplace, for when you need to know what a command or piece of hardware does immediately. Students find it useful, as explanations are given in addition to command names.
Books are another route to go. Books are the best option for when you just want to sit down and study, but aren’t so good for when you need a quick answer. Students find that books are the better choice, as they are able to go into detail on explaining how Cisco products work in different conditions. For the workplace they are fine to have around, but are often less easy to use than the Cisco dictionary software programs available.
If all you need is a quick reference, consider using the help tool in the Cisco IOS. This help tool will quickly show you different commands that you are able to use, show how to use them, and give a brief description. It will not teach you how to use the commands in detail, so you will need to consult an expert or book for that. The in-program help feature is best suited for someone who might have forgotten a simple command.

Texting while driving is something that the majority of younger folk do, as studies report. It’s also something that is incredibly dangerous and foolish- leading to many reported deaths each year as a result of automobile accidents.
Current laws in the United States vary based on each state. There is no current federal law that outlaws texting while driving, but the majority of all states are either limiting the act or banishing it completely. At least half of the current states such as Washington have put groundwork down in making it a crime to text while driving.
Some states have shown sympathy for those who text while driving. Missouri is an example of a state that has done so, as it only bans those under the age of 21 from texting and driving. Those over this age can do as they wish at their own discretion. This hasn’t gone over well with some that have been directly affected by texting and driving, but it is a step in the right direction to keep the Missouri roads safe.
Some studies show that text messaging while driving have increased the chance of an auto accident by over 400%. This can be compared to driving while under the influence, which has also become taboo in the United States. Smart parents are starting to teach their kids that if they valued their own safety, and those of others, that they would refrain from texting while driving- even if it’s only to send two words or less.
Mobile phone companies are starting to make advances in newer technologies that make the act of texting a thing of the past. Voice recognition software is one of the solutions that isn’t quite perfected. While voice recognition can get a high accuracy rate, it is never perfect. Different dialects can also be hard to track. In addition, background noise could interfere with how the software picks up different words of speech.
The only real solution to texting while driving seems to be to actually call the person you intend on contacting. After all, mobile phones do primarily function as a means of speaking to another person. Whenever possible, those who currently text while drive should make the phone call instead. If that isn’t possible, then talking to the recipient at a later date is a much greater idea that potentially putting yourself at risk for an auto accident.

Packet Tracer is a wonderful development program put out by Cisco: a leader in computer networking hardware. Creating a basic network can be tough going, but it’s necessary in learning in order to qualify for the CCNA certification exam.
Having a networked based on a hub is easy enough- there isn’t any significant configuration. Putting a router in the network is a different story, however, since it will separate networks. Because it does so, any network containing a router will have at least two different network addresses for proper communication. Configuring them is just a matter of assigning the correct addresses and settings.
Constructing the network will take two crossover cables and a console cable. The two crossover cables will connect each desktop to the Ethernet ports of the router, while the console cable will connect one of the computers to the router for configuring. Be sure that the cable you are using isn’t a straight-through when using your Ethernet cable, as this type of cable is reserved for unlike devices.
The IP addresses you assign will be the logic of the operation. It’s up to you which network numbers and addresses you use, but they must follow a certain convention in order to work. You will be using at least four IP addresses total, counting your two desktop machines and two Ethernet ports on the router. Assign each Ethernet port and IP address that corresponds to a certain network. If you assign both to the same network, you will quickly see the configuration won’t work.
Even with all of the IP address information in place, and the Ethernet ports configured, there is still something missing. We haven’t installed a gateway address on the desktop machines. Without a gateway address, the computer won’t be able to send and receive information over the network. It’s simple to assign: the gateway address is going to be the IP address of the Ethernet interface that is connected to the desktop in question.
Last, we get to test the network we just created. By sending a packet of data through a ping, we can verify that one computer can contact another computer on a completely different network. From one computer, type in the ping command and the IP address of the separated computer. If the result times out, it means you have either configured the router improperly or have faulty cables. You will find that most often it’s a problem regarding cables and network topology.

Using Packet Tracer will simplify the process of designing the network so that you can save time in the overall process, and put more time into troubleshooting and problems that arise during the course of the implementation.
