So you have obtained your new Pilates reformer, but you don’t know which exercises you should do or in what motions. This is an average stumbling block and there is no need to worry- there are easy beginner exercises you can use to get started in building balance and strength.
Lay flat on your back and put your legs on the foot bar of your Pilates reformer- this is the natural position that you will use in many exercises. All of the exercises described so far can easily be modified to allow for a harder contraction on targeted muscles. In the example of the upper body exercise, you could use only one arm to propel your body up and down. The resulting motion will be twice as beneficial with each repetition- just be sure that you do the same amount of repetitions with your other arm. That way your body’s upper body strength will not become uneven.
We all learn differently- some are more visual, while others need hands-on practice. Whatever the case, more difficult moves will need the aid of a DVD video or personal guide. When you start doing intricate maneuvers, it is easy to err on the posture or breathing techniques you should be following. Start learning with a friend to get the moves down together and to increase your own motivation.
