Published by Fred at June 1st, 2010He was a California boy that was born in the 1940’s, in Newport Beach. At a very young age, he was preoccupied with tattoo art and wanted to be a tattoo artist. He is not only a tattoo artist, but one of the truest forms of an artist. His work is displayed at exhibitions, in museums, and in galleries. His professions are painter, tattoo artist and print-maker. He was so popular, that a line of clothing based on his art took off, and was picked up by major companies for promotion. In the following you will discover Ed Hardy company history.
While he was in school at the San Francisco Art Institute in the 60’s, he continued to follow his dreams, and while studying other forms of art, continued to perfect the art of tattooing. He then graduate with a BA in fine arts. In 1973, due to his relationship with Sailor Jerry Collins, he left for Japan to study with a Japanese master.
His first company was actually a publishing company. It was started in 1982, by he and his wife. The name was Hardy Apero Marks Publications. Under this company name, Hardy has published more than twenty books. Some of the books were really catalogs of his work, and the work of Sailor Jerry Collins. Hardy credits Collins for the extensive color work in tattoo art today.
He not only did tattoo work, but to love it was to study in. He is a historian on the subject of it, and on its lore. He gave up an opportunity to go to Yale, for the dream of his tattoo art. Of course, his is an artist of painting and etching.
Hardy’s works are shown in museums, galleries, and exhibitions. He is not just another tattoo artist. He is a true artist who made tattooing an art form. He no longer does tattoos himself, but he does watch over the business, and overseas the other artists.
He began the Ed Hardy clothing line in 2002 based on his tattoo art. Two years later it had gained the attention of Saks. In 2004, Christian Audigier licensed the rights to produce the line, and in 2009, Iconix bought fifty percent interest in Ed Hardy Brand.
